Chord Tones and Tension Notes

Every melody note either agrees with the chord under it... or leans against it. Great melodies do both.

In this lesson you'll

  • Find the chord tones.
  • Connect them with passing notes.
  • Lean on tension notes for emotion.

Remember

Chord tones on the strong beats lock a melody onto the harmony.

Passing notes step between chord tones on the weak beats, and keep the line moving.

An appoggiatura leans on the strong beat, then falls into the chord. That tiny release is what gives you chills.
